The Harford County Sheriff's Office is seeking a suspect involved in a suspicious driveway repair operation, and they're turning to the public for help. In a recent incident reported by FOX Baltimore, an elderly woman from Darlington fell prey to a scammer who pressured her into paying for unnecessary and overpriced driveway repairs.
On Sunday, the suspect aggressively pushed the homeowner into accepting his services after she initially refused. "The homeowner initially declined the service, but the man became aggressive, demanding she allow him to make the repairs," FOX Baltimore reported. Despite her unease, the elderly woman consented, only to be charged a much steeper price when the work was completed, which is not a practice of legitimate businesses.
The Sheriff's Office has since issued a warning, emphasizing that while companies could approach residents unexpectedly, none should pressure them to make immediate decisions or payments. As per NottinghamMD, "The victim was alone and nervous, and the subject continued to pressure the victim relentlessly." This high-pressure tactic culminated in a situation where the victim felt compelled to yield to the scammer's demands.
Recognizing the frequent targeting of the elderly by such scams, authorities encourage community vigilance. They are asking anyone who may recognize the suspect or have experienced a similar untold incident to come forward and contact the Northern Precinct at 410-692-7880.
