The Heart Hospital of Austin has infused new blood into its leadership team, appointing Kim Barker as its chief nursing officer effective July 21, according to a CBS Austin report. Barker, who brings a comprehensive background in cardiac and emergency care to the table, fills the shoes of Charles McCoy, now at St. David’s Medical Center, taking on the role of chief nursing officer there.
Barker's ascent in the healthcare realm is marked by a track record of critical roles and notable projects, dating back to her start as a patient care technician at St. David's HealthCare in 2006 before moving to the position of emergency service line director at St. David's North Austin Medical Center; her most recent tenure as assistant chief nursing officer at St. David's South Austin Medical Center since 2022 saw her manage several key departments such as cardiology and emergency services and she led the design implementation of a nurse extern program, complete with curriculum development and competency assessments, per information from both CBS Austin and Becker's Hospital Review.
Brett Matens, the chief executive officer of Heart Hospital of Austin, has hailed Barker's appointment, saying, "With more than two decades of experience, Kim has a deep understanding of cardiovascular excellence and a steadfast commitment to compassionate care," a sentiment captured by CBS Austin.
The hospital hopes to carry forward its legacy of high-quality patient care with Barker’s extensive experience in leading and innovating nursing practices, as Matens expressed excitement, in his words, "We are excited to welcome Kim to the Heart Hospital of Austin family, where she will continue to advance the high-quality care our patients have come to expect," stipulating the institution's commitment to maintaining its reputation and service standards, all while ensuring the seamless integration of new leadership.
