Yesterday, the Henderson Main Post Office temporarily suspended services due to the presence of a small hazardous substance. According to News 3 LV, postal workers discovered approximately half a tablespoon of mercury, necessitating the intervention of the Henderson Fire Department (HFD). The building was evacuated to safely address the situation, and though the post office is to be shut down temporarily, HFD assured the public there will be no permanent closure.
The alert came at around 2:43 p.m., as the HFD swung rapidly into action upon receiving the Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) call. No injuries have been reported in the course of the incident, but the facility had to be cleared to ensure everyone's safety. Officials are yet to determine exactly how or why the mercury found its way into the postal system. Still, the United States Postal Service is taking the opportunity to remind customers that it is illegal to ever mail mercury metal and items containing mercury, as seen in a statement obtained by KTNV.
The specific reasons for the mercury presence at the Henderson Main Post Office remain unclear, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days. The Postal Service has directed mailers to their Publication 52 – Hazardous, Restricted and Perishable Mail – for a comprehensive guide regarding mailing requirements that is available on the Postal Explorer site.
Further updates on the reopening of the post office will be offered as information becomes available, according to the initial reports from both sources.
