Hilliard's police and fire departments are rolling out the red carpet for the special needs and autism communities this July, and everybody's invited to the party. Dubbed the Amazing Abilities Open House, the event is a chance for these often-overlooked community members to meet and greet their local first responders under friendly, relaxed conditions. According to an article on the City of Hilliard's official website, activities will be sensory-friendly during the first hour, recognizing the unique needs of attendees.
Scheduled for Saturday, July 26, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Hilliard Safety Services Building, families can explore various police and firefighting apparatuses, and representatives from other local agencies will offer their services to residents with autism and special needs, providing a one-of-a-kind experience for the guest while they can don their favorite superhero attire that perhaps, like the capes of their fictional counterparts, symbolize the daily triumphs over challenges not everybody can comprehend or even, willing to recognize.
"As first responders, we know the real heroes are those in the special needs and autism communities overcoming adversity every day," according to the City of Hilliard. Detective Brandon Long, who organizes the event, shared in a statement that adequately captures the spirit of the open house.
