Hillsborough County is taking a proactive approach to disaster preparedness by opening five self-serve sandbag sites this coming Saturday, August 2. According to an announcement on the Hillsborough County's official website, residents can fill up to 10 sandbags to fortify their homes against potential flooding. The materials, including sand, empty bags, and a limited supply of shovels, will be provided, though the county won't be handing out pre-filled bags.

In an effort to assist communities that have faced significant hurricane-related flooding in the past, the chosen locations for sandbag filling are strategically placed. Residents are required to show ID, like a driver's license or utility bill, to verify their Hillsborough County residency. Operations are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, allowing residents plenty of time to prepare without the pressure of an looming storm.

The sites set for sandbag distribution include Northlakes Sports Complex, Shimberg Sports Complex, Providence West Park, E.G. Simmons Conservation Park, and Burnett Sports Complex. With the exception of E.G. Simmons Conservation Park, which will stay open to visitors, the other locations will be dedicated solely to the sandbagging efforts on that day. Even the pickleball courts at Northlakes Sports Complex will remain available to the more athletically inclined citizens while their neighbors pile sandbags into trunks and truck beds.

While earnest preparations are underway, the rest of the community is expected to carry on with the weekend's usual hustle and bustle. Hillsborough's decision to offer such services on a clear-skied day reflects a commitment to readiness.
