Hillsborough County Fire Rescue is in talks to develop a new fire station, introducing modern facilities that aim to supplant two outdated stations in Plant City. According to Hillsborough County's official press release, this move comes with functionality and health benefits for local first responders.
An undeveloped 5.9-acre site at 2606 W. Sam Allen Rd. is the selected location for the proposed station, strategized to replace the existing stations built in the 1980s – Fire Station No. 26 - Cork/Knights and Fire Station No. 30 - Midway. Encroached by the city on three sides, Fire Station No. 30 is noted for being engulfed by rapid development within the Plant City municipal boundaries, which demands a response infrastructure that the current old buildings, with their two-bay stations, are hard-pressed to match effectively.
The proposed facility's plans detail a design inclusive of three or four bay stations along with health-focused features such as decontamination suites. They address pressing concerns related to firefighters' exposure to harmful particulate matter. Individual sleeping quarters are also part of the blueprint, intended to promote wellness by mitigating the spread of airborne illnesses among the rescue personnel.
Modern dispatch alerting systems, complete with digital data displays, are poised to enhance response times drastically for the new Plant City fire station. Subtle, yet effective, the designed alert technology aims to ease the physical toll on firefighters, whose repeated exposure to high-stress emergency alerts necessitates a more nuanced system.
A community meeting has been slated to provide insights and gather feedback on the project. It will take place at Bethany Baptist Church, located at 3409 North Cork Rd., Plant City, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. Those seeking more information are encouraged to call (813) 272-6600.
