With Hillsborough County's population rising sharply, local officials are turning their attention toward revamping the transportation infrastructure to accommodate the influx. According to a recent press release from the Florida Legislature's Office of Economic and Demographic Research, the current populace of Hillsborough stands at 1.59 million. Projections indicate a swell to 2.5 million by 2070, prompting a call to action for improved roadways.
Efforts are underway to plan for future roadways that will not only meet the needs of residents but also align with the county's growing scale. The Florida Department of Transportation has highlighted the urgency of expanding and adapting infrastructure. A critical component to this endeavor is updating the Corridor Preservation Plan (CPP), a guiding element of the county’s Comprehensive Plan. The last sizable revision of the CPP was done 15 years ago, reflecting a land and travel landscape that has since evolved markedly.
Recognizing the dynamic nature of land use and transportation patterns, Hillsborough County planners are looking to reshape the CPP to ensure that roadways in the area remain safe and efficient for the foreseeable future. "County planners want to ensure transportation is safe and efficient in Hillsborough for years to come," county officials stated in a press release. This commitment speaks to a broader recognition that as communities grow, so must the infrastructures that sustain them.
