New York State Police announced the discovery of 9-year-old Melina Frattolin’s body in a shallow pond in Ticonderoga, New York, following a search that began after she was reported missing last Saturday. Her father, Luciano Frattolin, faces charges of murder and concealment of a human corpse. Initially, Luciano reported Melina missing, claiming she was abducted by passengers in a white van while he stopped in a wooded area, but investigators found the abduction claim "proven to be untrue," according to CBS News New York.
Following received tips, the New York State Police Horse Rangers discovered Melina's body a day after the search began. NYSP Captain McConnell described the situation as "certainly a difficult case, a heartbreaking investigation," as detailed by USA Today.
Luciano and Melina, who are from Montreal, entered the U.S. for a holiday on July 11 and planned to return yesterday. Surveillance footage captured Melina in Saratoga Springs around 5:30 p.m., and she spoke with her mother shortly afterward, showing no signs of distress. Her death is believed to have occurred between that last communication and the 911 call made by Luciano at approximately 10 p.m.
An Amber Alert was issued by the Warren County Sheriff's Office but was later canceled after Melina’s body was found. The investigation is ongoing, with an autopsy pending to determine the cause of death. Authorities urge anyone with information about Melina’s death to contact the New York State Police at 518-783-3211.
