In the wake of a tragic drive-by shooting that left a Great Dane dead, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has made significant headway in cutting down the city's list of cold cases. According to a recent statement from the JSO, six individuals have now been arrested, with 11 shooting-related incidents reaching resolution due to these breakthroughs.

Among the arrested, 19-year-old Logan Kurlin and 22-year-old Nathan Kizer were initially identified as suspects in the August 2024 shooting that claimed the life of Naomi, the canine victim. Shell casings from the criminal act played a crucial role, enabling detectives to link the duo to the incident. Found in the recovered stolen Hyundai Sonata, operated by the suspects, the investigation gained momentum, unraveling ties to a string of shootings across Jacksonville.

Questioning of Kurlin and Kizer further led to the uncovering of a group of friends - now accused of involvement in multiple shootings, perpetrated as both reported and unreported crimes. Beyond the charges for Kurlin and Kizer, 23-year-old Louis Gill, 18-year-old Jeremiah Simmonds, 21-year-old Darrell Brill and 16-year-old Hannah Johnson have been brought into custody, facing attempted murder charges among other indictments connected to the shootings.

Subsequent to the extensive inquisition by law enforcement, it has since been revealed, Gill, Simmonds, Kizer, and Kurlin are to answer to seven counts of Attempted Murder, inclusive of the senseless death of the homeowner's pet. Brill and Johnson, while accused of fewer offenses, still stand charged with two counts of Attempted Murder, alongside other lesser crimes.

The forensic work isn't over as experts from the Crime Gun Intelligence Center press on to ascertain whether this group holds responsibility for additional violent acts in the city. Meanwhile, collaboration between investigators and the State Attorney’s Office is ongoing to ensure that the alleged perpetrators face full legal accountability for their actions.
