Two Texans found themselves in a precarious situation while trekking the strenuous Kalalau Trail on Kauai this past Thursday. The Kauai Fire Department had to dispatch a team, including their Air 1 helicopter, to rescue a 44-year-old and a 45-year-old after they ran into trouble during their hike. Kauai County officials reported that the hikers were facing an alleged ankle injury and symptoms of heatstroke.
Responding shortly after the distress call at approximately 1:50 p.m., a rescue crew from the Līhuʻe Fire Station was dispatched via Air 1 helicopter. The team located the hikers near Kalalau Beach and airlifted them to Princeville Airport. According to Kauai Fire Department Chief Michael Gibson, both individuals declined further medical treatment upon arrival.
Chief Gibson, emphasizing the gravity of the rescue, told Kauai County officials, “We’re grateful this rescue ended safely, but every Air 1 deployment puts our crews at risk, especially in remote areas like Kalalau. When emergencies turn out not to require medical care, it raises serious concerns.” Gibson further urged hikers to be aware of their limits and to come prepared in order to avoid unnecessary evacuations.
The incident concluded by approximately 3:30 p.m., with first responders clearing the area after both individuals were safely transported and declined further medical care. Kauai officials continue to encourage hikers to plan accordingly and remain aware of trail conditions and personal limitations.
