Residents in Wailua are being alerted to a spike in vehicle break-ins, as reported by the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD). The burglaries, often targeting unlocked cars or those with items like electronics and wallets left visible, are prompting law enforcement to advise the community on preventative measures. The KPD has emphasized taking simple steps to reduce the attractiveness of vehicles to potential thieves, which includes not leaving valuables inside and ensuring cars are locked.
According to an advisory published on the Kauai County's official website, residents should park in well-lit, visible areas to deter criminal activity, a situation further worsened when secluded or dimly lit spots offer cover for lurking opportunistic burglars. In addition to protecting their vehicles, the KPD is asking people to keep an eye out for any unusual behavior and report it to authorities.
For those seeking ways to aid local law enforcement, KPD suggests registering external home security cameras with the City Protect program. This program is a community safety resource that assists police by pinpointing the locations of nearby cameras, thus expediting investigations. Despite being part of this program, participants' privacy remains intact, as the initiative does not grant direct access to any camera footage.
Meanwhile, individuals who have any information regarding the string of break-ins are urged by the KPD to come forward. Informants have the option to stay anonymous by using several contact methods, including Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i's phone line and web resources. The reports made by vigilant residents play a crucial role in not just preventing future incidents but also in apprehending the suspects involved in these crimes.
