Lake City authorities have arrested a woman after her two-year-old child was found locked in a sweltering car outside Regal Cinema 90. According to First Coast News, the toddler was discovered in a car with interior conditions exacerbated by the day's heat index, surging past the 100-degree mark on Saturday.

The mother, identified as Tipora Merriex, 18, allegedly took the child out of the theater because of multiple disruptions and chose to quickly return to watch the movie, leaving the two-year-old unattended in the vehicle. In a report by Action News Jax, cops say they were alerted to the situation around 5:49 p.m. and found the child "flushed, sweating, and crying."

Lake City Police responded by forcibly entering the vehicle to rescue the child, breaking a window in the process. "Our officers acted swiftly to ensure the safety of this young child," Lake City Chief of Police Gerald Butler stated in an interview obtained by First Coast News. The child was immediately taken to Lake City Medical Center for treatment, but details on their condition are still being awaited.

Witnesses at the scene confirmed to authorities that Merriex had, indeed, remained inside the cinema while her child suffered alone in the lot. "Leaving a child unattended in a vehicle under these conditions is unacceptable," Butler further commented. As reported by WCJB, the outside temperature at the time hovered around 94 degrees, though the heat index pushed the feels-like temperatures significantly higher, making the conditions inside the parked car potentially deadly.

Merriex was arrested and is facing charges of child neglect. She was transported to the Columbia County Detention Center following the incident. This event serves as a grave reminder to parents to never leave children unattended in vehicles, especially under harsh weather conditions.
