Last Saturday, firefighters responded to a garage fire in Clark County. The Clark County Fire Department was called around 2:40 p.m. to the 1200 block of Ponce de Leon Avenue after reports of smoke. When crews arrived, the garage was already fully on fire, according to 8 News Now.
Forty-four firefighters, including seven engines, one truck, and other units, responded to a garage fire that left two adults and two dogs without a home. The American Red Cross assisted those displaced. All occupants, including a 100-year-old woman, were safely rescued with no injuries. Former arson investigator Joel McGinnis said, "This was a very bad fire," and noted the risks of garage fires. Neighbors believe e-bike batteries in the garage may have caused the fire. Gary Turner, a neighbor, said, "I was out in my backyard, and I noticed billowing smoke, so I called 911 and they asked me to run over and see what was going on," and added, "About that time is when I saw a car in flames and it was billowing out in front of the garage," as reported by News3LV.
A resident, Cheryl Gettes, noted the quick arrival of firefighters, saying, "The response from the fire department is so commendable because within minutes they were here. I feel so much safer knowing that if there’s a response that’s needed, they’ll be here," in an interview with 8 News Now. A hazmat unit also responded due to concerns about a lithium-ion battery. The fire occurred during temperatures over 100 degrees. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
