Los Angeles County was hit with a series of store looting incidents over the weekend, coinciding with illegal street takeovers at various locations. An early Sunday morning break-in at a WSS shoe store in Carson was particularly notable, occurring shortly after a street takeover at Wilmington Avenue and Del Amo Boulevard. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department responded to the incident, which resulted in at least two people being detained, as reported by NBC Los Angeles.
A T-Mobile store, situated at South Figueroa Street and Slauson Avenue, also fell victim to a similar crime around 2:46 a.m. Sunday, according to FOX 11. Officer Rosario Cervantes mentioned to the press that a burglary report was filed, however, the details of any stolen merchandise were not confirmed. Another store, an AutoZone near South Los Angeles, was looted just before Sunday morning as well but, no arrests have been disclosed yet in association with these burglaries or the takeovers.
Eyewitness News obtained video evidence of the chaos at the WSS store, showcasing the parking lot littered with shoeboxes and the storefront's shattered glass. Although some individuals were shown being detained in the footage, the police have yet to confirm any formal arrests in connection to the burglary or if anything was indeed stolen.
The series of thefts commenced with the AutoZone break-in at around 1:30 a.m. Saturday near Century Boulevard and Central Avenue during a street takeover, according to CBS News Los Angeles. The affected stores, including the WSS shoe store where employees boarded up windows post-burglary, were each near the locales of these takeovers, highlighting a concerning trend connecting these disruptive events with subsequent criminal activity. At this stage, officials have not established a direct link between the takeovers and the lootings, and the investigations are ongoing.
