In a swift nighttime operation that reads like a script from a crime drama, Ventura County authorities arrested a stabbing suspect after an intense remote rescue effort near Jackson Camp. According to a news release by the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, a 911 text came in just before the stroke of midnight on July 5th, calling for help two miles past the Punch Bowls in the rugged terrain surrounding Santa Paula.
The coordinated response brought together Fillmore Patrol, the Ventura County Aviation Unit, and other agencies in a staging at Thomas Aquinas College. From there, the Aviation Unit transported deputies near the campground around 1:30 AM on July 6, where they apprehended Collin Maki, a 35-year-old from Los Angeles. The Fillmore Patrol successfully detained the suspect, who was then evaluated and booked, though later released on bail.
The adult male victim, whose identity has not been released but is also from Los Angeles, was airlifted to Ventura County Medical Center for a stab wound to the chest. While criminal scenes in such inaccessible locales often challenge law enforcement, this incident demonstrated a significant inter-agency cooperation that led to the timely arrest and urgent medical care for the victim involved.
The sheriff's office was quick to credit the Ventura County Aviation Unit, a critical partnership between the sheriff's office and fire department that operates year-round with experienced firefighters and deputies. "Join us in the fight on crime by following us on 'X' @fillmoresheriff," the sheriff's office stated, signaling the importance of community engagement and vigilance. Sergeant Jarrod Foote prepared the news release and underscored that they rely on public support and information sharing.
Furthermore, Ventura County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and filing of a criminal complaint against individuals responsible for the crime. Tipsters, who can remain anonymous, are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477). In the wake of such events, the sheriff's office hopes these incentives will encourage more community members to come forward with any valuable information they might possess.
