At approximately 9 PM on Tuesday, reports of a shooting at Foothills Elementary School caused an urgent response from deputies in Buckley, but it was quickly discerned to be a cruel hoax. Responding officers rushed to the scene with the intensity expected of an active shooter situation, only to find an eerily quiet schoolground with no signs of violence. A swift investigation initiated by deputies, aided by the South Sound 911 call center, pinpointed the source of the false alarm, a 31-year-old man with a prior record, according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
The call, fabricated and ominous, was tracked to the suspect's phone. Audio analysis and a reverse call confirmed the link, but the suspect was initially uncooperative. After an unsuccessful 10-minute negotiation, deputies progressed towards obtaining a search warrant for the individual’s property. It seems that faced with the mounting evidence, the suspect conceded to the futility of his situation and turned himself in; he was soon arrested for false reporting and obstruction.
The investigators' precision and determination stand out in a time when such pranks can lead to needless panic and a wasteful diversion of emergency resources.
