A South Side community is grappling with the aftermath of a fatal shooting that occurred during an early morning dice game. According to the KTSA, San Antonio police reported that they received a call from West Villaret Avenue around 3 a.m. yesterday, where they found a man in his 20s shot to death.
The shooting suspect had been participating in the game before things took a deadly turn. "At some point, things got out of hand and one of the men playing the game pulled a gun and shot a victim," said a witness in the statement obtained by KTSA. After the incident, the shooter reportedly got into his vehicle and fled. Authorities have not released the names of those involved, and the search for the shooter is ongoing.
A local resident, Mario Rodriguez, expressed his shock to KSAT 12 News, revealing the uncharacteristic nature of the violence in what he described as a typically peaceful neighborhood. "I just saw all these lights and the policemen. And I said, 'Oh my God, they’re right here,'" Rodriguez recounted the disorienting scene which disrupted the quiet of the night.
The dice game, it appears, had been taking place among roommates and invited guests, a witness told KSAT 12 News, adding tension escalated before the fatal shooting. In the aftermath, the police cordoned off the street for their investigation, yet details surround the motive or circumstances remain elusive. Rodriguez added, "You know, I’ve been here 55, 60 years," underscoring his long tenure in the neighborhood and the rarity of such crimes in the area.
With no immediate leads on the shooter's whereabouts, the San Antonio community waits and hopes for resolution. The police's effort to track down the suspect continues as they piece together the events that led to the tragedy.
