A 61-year-old man is in critical condition following an incident where he was 'sucked' into an MRI machine due to his metal necklace. The event occurred at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, Nassau County, with detectives reporting to ABC7 New York that this mishap took place just after 4:30 p.m. yesterday.
The individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly walked into the MRI room while a scan was in progress. The magnetic field of the MRI machine, which is known to be exceptionally powerful, and always active, immediately pulled him in because of the large metallic chain around his neck. According to NBC New York, the man was not the patient undergoing the scan but was there with someone else.
Injuries from MRI machines can vary widely. From minor burns and cuts to severe trauma, the risks of bringing metal into the vicinity of such devices are well-documented. The exact nature of the man's injuries from Wednesday's incident has not been released, however, officials emphasized that the incident sparked a "medical episode" and that he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Nassau County Police are looking into how the man ended up in such a perilous situation, but they have stated that the event appears to be an accident with no criminality involved. This type of accident, while rare, serves as a critical reminder of the inherent dangers posed by the powerful magnets used in MRI machines. Safety protocols are typically in place to prevent such incidents, which often include clear warnings and the removal of metallic objects before entering an MRI room.
As the investigation continues, the specifics of how the safety measures were breached in this case remain unclear. Nassau Open MRI and responding officers have not provided further details about how the man found himself in the path of the machine's magnetic field, or why the metal chain was not removed or detected prior to his entrance into the MRI room. The local hospital where the man was taken has not released any updates on his condition since the time of admission.
