A typically calm evening turned violent in Washington Square Park when a man was stabbed during an altercation, authorities reported. The New York Police Department said the incident occurred yesterday, around 7:45 p.m. The confrontation involved two 21-year-old men from Brooklyn, who, during a dispute, ended up in a physical scuffle, ABC7NY reports.
According to law enforcement sources, the men identified as Keeshawn Grantnesbitt and Marquese Haynes, found themselves embroiled in a verbal dispute that escalated into violence. Their argument, the root of which remains unspecified, resulted in Haynes dropping a knife he had been carrying at the time, the knife was then used by Grantnesbitt to stab Haynes in the abdomen, according to AMNY. Emergency services rushed the victim to Bellevue Hospital where he was said to be in a stable condition.
Following the chaotic scene, police apprehended and charged Grantnesbitt with assault on the same evening. In addition to sustaining the injury, Haynes faces charges of menacing and criminal possession of a weapon, police stated. The NYPD relayed that the area under the 6th Precinct, which encompasses Greenwich Village and the West Village, has seen almost a 20% decline in reported assaults compared to the previous year.
Despite this particular incident, recent NYPD data up to July 6 highlights that there had been 69 incidents of assault within the precinct, with 17 occurring in the past week. The police are working to understand the circumstances that led to the violent encounter between Grantnesbitt and Haynes, such events distorting the generally peaceful ambiance of Washington Square Park and challenging perceptions of safety in the historic area.
