A hit-and-run incident in Manhattan on Tuesday left a 65-year-old e-bike rider in critical condition. The cyclist sustained severe head trauma after being struck by a 2024 Nissan Rogue operated by a 21-year-old driver on Second Avenue near 15th Street. Authorities say the driver, now identified as Jasir Vann, fled the scene, only to be located and arrested later in Brooklyn, PIX11 reports.
Vann, who faces charges for leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license, was apprehended roughly two hours after the incident, as confirmed by police, his capture was not a result of a peaceful surrender but the byproduct of an investigation spurred on, in part, by a Reddit user's account of witnessing the license plate on Vann's vehicle before the getaway. The Streetsblog NYC relayed a witness's description of the crash's immediate aftermath, noting that "the cyclist was unconscious when paramedics arrived and they immediately started doing CPR and quickly put him in the ambulance."
The identity of the cyclist, who was riding an Arrow 9 electric bike, has not been released, but their condition at Bellevue Hospital remains critical. The incident, occurring around 6 p.m. as both the cyclist and Vann were traveling southbound on Second Avenue, also draws attention to the dangers faced by cyclists, particularly when sharing the road with vehicles.
Details are still emerging, but reports indicate the cyclist may not have been in the bike lane at the time of the collision due to avoiding a pedestrian, according to what another witness told Streetsblog NYC.
