Two individuals died in a fatal accident that occurred in Chinatown last Saturday morning. According to ABC7NY, a car sped off the Manhattan Bridge and lost control at around 7:30 a.m., resulting in the deaths of cyclist Kevin Crukshank, 55, and pedestrian May Kwok, 63.
Surveillance footage showed a stolen blue Chevrolet speeding along Canal Street and Bowery before veering onto the sidewalk, where it struck Crukshank and Kwok, who was seated on a bench, and then crashed into an unoccupied police van. CBS News reported that the vehicle was a rental that had been due for return the previous month. The crash left debris scattered across the scene, including the damaged car, a shattered windshield, and the victims’ personal belongings.
Following the incident, the two occupants of the vehicle—women aged 22 and 23—attempted to flee the scene but were quickly taken into custody by authorities. Officials reported that Kennedy Lecraft, 22, was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, as well as criminal possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of a vehicle. The 23-year-old driver has not yet been charged in connection with the fatal crash.
Mayor Eric Adams, referencing the accident, highlighted the role of excessive speed, stating "It appears to be excessive speed. Two people are in custody, unfortunate incident--no one should lose their life in that manner," according to a statement obtained by ABC7NY.
As the investigation continues, Crukshank has been identified as someone known in the community for assisting friends and neighbors. His family has not issued a public statement. During the incident, the NYPD van involved in the crash struck the New York Jewelers Exchange. The storefront was damaged, but no one was inside at the time.
