As the calendar turns to July and summer hits its stride, vehicle owners across Maryland are being warned: July is National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, a time to remain vigilant against car theft. In a recent release from the Maryland State Police and the Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council (MVTPC), startling statistics demonstrate the importance of safeguarding automobiles. "A vehicle is stolen every 22 minutes," the agencies report, with the lion's share occurring because owners leave their vehicles unlocked—a fact that should galvanize us all to double-check those doors before walking away.

Left unattended during the hot summer nights, vehicles become easy targets for opportunistic thieves. The Maryland Vehicle Theft Prevention Council highlights that in Maryland, most vehicles are stolen from being left unlocked, and half of these incidents involve a key or fob left invitingly inside. With nightfall, the risk only increases, as MVTPC shared that about 95% of the stolen vehicles did not have any form of anti-theft device to ward off the pilferers. Federally, the picture is just as grim, with a vehicle stolen every 37 seconds last year, culminating in over $8 billion in losses.

However, it's not just about locking doors and windows. The MVTPC stresses the integration of practical anti-theft devices, such as steering wheel locks, brake pedal locks, and OBD port locks. Coupled with common-sense measures like never leaving your car running unattended and parking in well-lit areas, these strategies can significantly deter would-be thieves. The MVTPC's efforts include a robust grant program that, for Fiscal Year 2026, amounted to $2.4 million infused into efforts to bolster enforcement, community outreach, and educational projects.

This joint initiative also ventures into the digital realm, with an annual PSA contest that encourages Maryland university students to conjure up persuasive, creative messages about the importance of vehicle theft prevention. With one's sense of security riding fast on the heels of such precautionary measures, the MVTPC initiative seeks to ingrain a culture of vigilance that could ensure that each driver's journey, no matter how mundane, doesn't take an unexpected detour into victimhood.
