A memorial gathering in South Los Angeles's Hyde Park neighborhood took a tumultuous turn when a crowd clashed with the LAPD on Monday night. Initially congregating to honor Travon Pratt, the vigil was mistaken by authorities for a street takeover, prompting a police response. FOX LA reported tensions mounted as 40 to 60 people filled the intersection of Crenshaw and Hyde Park boulevards to pay their respects to Kenny Hall, a motorcyclist and Metro security ambassador who died in a crash over the Fourth of July weekend. Statements obtained by FOX 11 from individuals at the scene, such as "Specc," noted, "We came together, all the community came…we all came out here to celebrate his life, and then all of a sudden, the police just came out of nowhere."
According to the FOX LA coverage, the LAPD arrived at dusk, when the vigil reportedly began to prepare for a street takeover. While the crowd became more disruptive, multiple LAPD patrol vehicles had their tires punctured, and the officers were forced to wait for replacements while their damaged units were towed. Despite the destruction, no injuries or arrests were recorded by the following morning.
In a separate report by NBC Los Angeles, a candlelight memorial was observed amidst the reported crowd blockage of the intersection, but it was not immediately clear if it was associated with the vigil. Most of the group had dissipated within 30 minutes of law enforcement's arrival, echoing details from the FOX LA report. This confrontation in the NBC Los Angeles article highlighted a common thread of tension between community gatherings and police responses in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, ABC7 captured video that showed parts of the skirmish with police through the Citizen app. While the confrontation did not result in injuries, several LAPD police cars ended up with slashed tires. An eyewitness speaking to ABC7 clarified that the memorial was indeed for Travon Pratt, a victim of an unresolved shooting incident from the previous month. By drawing from the ABC7 news release, this event underscored an undercurrent of community grief compounded by aggressive encounters with city police.
