After a year-long investigation into an incident involving threats and a firearm on Rhode Island Avenue, NW, the Metropolitan Police Department has made a significant arrest. On June 8, 2024, at around 9:50 p.m., an encounter escalated when a suspect, now identified as 38-year-old Benedict Otunba of Capitol Heights, MD, allegedly brandished a handgun and aggressively threw objects at another driver's vehicle. The victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, found themselves trapped at a stoplight in the 600 block while Otunba attempted to obstruct their way, ultimately causing damage to their vehicle before fleeing the scene.
Details on how law enforcement identified Otunba as the suspect have not been disclosed. However, the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force played a key role in his apprehension. According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department, the task force arrested Otunba last wednesday, pursuant to a DC Superior Court warrant.
Otunba now faces multiple charges, including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun), Threats to Kidnap or Injure, and Destruction of Property. If convicted, these charges carry serious legal consequences. The arrest is part of MPD’s continuing efforts to address violent crime in the District.
The Metropolitan Police Department has not released additional details about the incident or arrest but emphasized its commitment to public safety. “Our communities deserve to feel safe, and the MPD is dedicated to holding those who threaten that safety accountable,” the Metropolitan Police Department stated. Authorities say more information may become available as legal proceedings move forward.
