In a move designed to increase housing options and affordability, Milwaukee has adopted legislation for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). The new regulations aim to encourage more diverse and inclusive neighborhoods throughout the city by allowing homeowners to add secondary housing units on their existing lots.
"We've worked hard to get to this point," said Milwaukee Council Member, speaking to the need for the city to develop in line with its counterparts. Citing the myriad gains, from more affordable housing to bolstering intergenerational living setups, the council member expressed relief that the legislation received the green light. "I'm thankful that a majority of my colleagues saw fit to pass a less restrictive version of my ADU legislation that provides us with another option to continue to tackle our city’s housing issues," they added, according to a statement released by Milwaukee's city council.
The passing of the ADU ordinance represents a strategic move as city officials respond to growing pressures on Milwaukee's housing market. ADUs can serve as an innovative path to supplement existing housing and meet demographic changes, where elderly family members or young adults can reside closer to the main household, thereby reinforcing family bonds while maintaining privacy.
