In a jarring discovery that's shaking up Milwaukee County governance, the local Transportation & Transit Committee expressed "deep concern" after finding out the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is looking at a significant and unexpected $10.9 million deficit for the year 2025. According to a press release from the Committee, members were blindsided by this fiscal crisis, especially since recent meetings with MCTS officials revealed no such concerns.
At a June 11 gathering of the committee, there were no indications of the looming shortfall. However, the deficit revelation emerged later, without prior heads-up, leading supervisors to engage Interim MCTS Managing Director Julie Esch for explanations on the abrupt financial downturn. The committee, comprising Supervisor Steven Shea, Vice-Chair Supervisor Juan Miguel Martinez, and members Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones, Jack Eckblad, and Justin Bielinski, stated on Milwaukee County, “We were given no hint of this impending deficit” during earlier assessments of financial health.
The group is now taking decisive actions to unravel the mystery behind the sudden plunge into the red. A critical element of their response plan is requesting detailed financial reports from MCTS staff. This initiative aims at discerning the precise factors that caused this sudden financial crisis. Simultaneously, the committee has sanctioned an independent audit of MCTS's budgeting and reporting operations, already initiated by the County’s Director of Audits. This scrutiny seeks to bring clarity, transparency, and presumably, some degree of accountability to the situation.
This financial debacle raises the stakes for the future planning of transit services. In a statement obtained by the Milwaukee County news release, the committee emphasized their commitment to resolving the issue, “Our riders and frontline teams depend on reliable service and fair labor practices. We must ensure that the people who keep buses running aren’t asked to bear the burden of a budget gap they didn’t create.”
