The Milwaukee Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) provided a detailed briefing to the Committee on Health Equity, Human Needs & Strategic Planning regarding a significant civil commitment case. In the heart of Milwaukee's justice system, the Milwaukee County Courthouse hosted the session yesterday, July 10, which was also accessible to the public via an online live stream.
Discussed during the meeting was the situation involving Amando Elijah Lang, whose release — lacking the required authorized notification — stirred recent media attention and necessitated policy reviews. According to a media advisory preceding the gathering, the case previously met the attention of the Committee on Audit. DHHS leadership was faced with questions regarding their adherence to Wis. Stat. § 971.14(6)(c) and the corrective steps being taken to ensure future compliance. Improvements to the process were a central topic, aimed at preventing further notification oversights in civil commitment procedures.
Representatives from DHHS outlined the incident involving Lang and described the corrective actions that Behavioral Health Services is implementing to address the issue. Not only was the presentation a response to the statutory non-compliance found in Lang's case, but it also served to assure the public and officials that measures are in place to prevent a recurrence of such errors.
