Food trucks and other temporary businesses in unincorporated Monroe County may soon face new regulations regarding their permits. A hearing will take place during the Board of County Commissioners meeting next Wednesday to discuss a potential amendment to the Monroe County Code of Ordinances. According to an update on Monroe County's official website, this amendment pertains specifically to Section 6-112 and aims to clarify the duration and terms of temporary use permits.

In detail, the amendment under consideration stipulates that temporary use permits, with the exception of public assemblies and temporary construction staging areas, would be limited to a single six-month permit per property for a specific temporary use. Following this period, to continue operating, businesses such as food trucks would need to secure separate building permits and adhere to further development approvals. The hearing is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. at the Marathon Government Center and will also be accessible via Zoom for interested parties.

Current policy allows for more lenient time frames for certain temporary structures, like construction trailers or housing in the aftermath of a hurricane, to stay in place. However, once the initial six-month permit for other uses comes to an end, all temporary structures and the associated temporary uses must be vacated from the property. In essence, if a food truck or similar business wishes to operate at the same location beyond six months, they will need to meet all applicable standards for permanent uses as outlined in the Monroe County Land Development Code.

Community members inquiring about the proposed changes or current regulations regarding food trucks can find more information on Monroe County's website or by reaching out to the Monroe County Planning and Environmental Resources Department at 305-289-2500.
