Overnight, chaos ensued along Interstate 71 North outside Columbus, after multiple crashes, including a significant one involving a semitruck carrying a heavy load of truck axles, gridlocked traffic for hours into the early morning. WBNS reported that the incident occurred last night around 10:30 p.m. near Fayette County, with significant challenges in clearing the accident due to its location in a construction zone. As a result, stranded drivers experienced a standstill, some for at least eight hours following the crash.
The blockade, spanning from State Route 38 through U.S. Route 62, trapped drivers as crews struggled to manage the heavy semitruck's removal. According to ABC6, the freeway was not reopened until just before 7 a.m. the following morning. Compounding the issue was another crash happening nearby, contributing further to the extensive traffic delays faced by motorists.
NBC4i noted additional difficulties in clearing the accidents, which involved two semi-trucks crashing in a tight corridor at the Madison and Pickaway County lines. The State Highway Patrol reported that there had been two more people hospitalized from each crash, though they confirmed there were no fatalities. The aftermath of these collisions produced a domino effect of traffic disruption, with crews finding limited space to navigate around the narrow lanes and nonexistent shoulders while attempting to remedy the situation that kept many motorists in suspension, hanging on behind wheels immobile.
As traffic slowly began to flow again in the early hours of dawn, the ripple effects of the crashes lingered on, with drivers inching forward cautiously. The delayed clearing, which involved using heavy machinery to lift the damaged trailer, was only completed after more than seven laborious hours, finally allowing for movement where there had been inertia, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, who were tasked with managing the resulting congestion and assuring that safety measures were being strictly adhered to by the weary travelers.
