The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is currently carrying out Operation Firecracker 'Booze It & Lose It' with increased patrols to put the brakes on impaired driving, in a campaign that runs through July 6. The NCDOT reports that law enforcement across the state is on heightened alert and is reminding residents that arranging a sober ride home is essential for safety when consuming alcohol.

In addition to highway safety initiatives, NCDOT celebrated the reopening of Chimney Rock State Park, nine months consequent to the wrath of Hurricane Helene. A new temporary road and bridge have been established, allowing residents, and enthusiasts a path back to the natural escape. At the dedication ceremony, NCDOT officials underscored the importance of rebuilding and resilience in the face of natural disasters.

This week saw two North Carolina bridges renamed in honor of fallen officers. According to the NCDOT, the bridge on Parkton Tobermory Road over Interstate 95 in Robeson County has been dedicated to Officer Bobby J. Furmage. In Johnston County, the N.C. 36 Veteran’s Parkway bridge over I-40 now bears the name of Trooper AJ Stocks, serving as lasting tributes to their service and sacrifice.

To address high summer temperatures, the NCDOT’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has introduced operational changes at driver license offices. Walk-in customers will now be accommodated throughout the day instead of during limited hours. Upon arrival, individuals will check in with an examiner and wait in their vehicles until called, reducing indoor crowding. DMV staff will also pre-screen documents to streamline the process and will notify customers via text when it’s their turn, aiming to minimize wait times and improve overall efficiency.
