In a move toward transparency, New York Attorney General Letitia James has made public security camera footage from the ongoing investigation into the death of John Bonds. Bonds, who passed away after being involved in an incident with an off-duty police officer, succumbed to his injuries on June 2. The decision to release the footage aligns with James' initiative to bolster public trust by providing open access to evidence during these investigations.
The footage, which depicts the events leading up to Mr. Bonds' fatal encounter on May 27, 2025, is now available according to an official statement from the Attorney General's Office. Viewers are cautioned by the Attorney General's website, as the video contains content that some may find disturbing. Over the past years, the imperative to scrutinize officer-involved deaths has intensified, making such releases a focal point of accountability efforts.
Under the authority of New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the Office of Special Investigation (OSI) examines each reported incident wherein a death may be attributable to the actions or omissions of any police or peace officer, whether on or off duty. John Bonds' case falls under this mandate, placing it within the purview of the OSI. An official press release by the Attorney General's Office outlines this legislative context and the office's obligations in these situations.
The dissemination of the security camera footage does not reflect any presumption of culpability or innocence on the part of anyone involved in the pending criminal matter. "The release of this footage is not an expression of any opinion as to the guilt or innocence of any party in a criminal matter or any opinion as to how or whether any individual may be charged with a crime," delineates the formal statement from Attorney General's Office.
With the release of the footage, authorities have taken a step towards maintaining public trust while ensuring due diligence is followed in the pursuit of justice for John Bonds.
