New Yorkers are facing a sweltering day with heat advisories and flood watches in effect across the city, as the National Weather Service New York NY warns of potential severe weather hazards. According to the forecast, a Heat Advisory remains in force from 10 AM this morning to 8 PM EDT this evening, and residents can also expect a flood watch starting from 2 PM EDT this afternoon through late tonight.
The heat advisory spans multiple boroughs with Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island expecting heat index values to reach as high as 102, as per the respective extended forecasts on the government weather site.
Brooklyn is not spared, with an even higher heat index value of up to 102 predicted. Meanwhile, Queens forecasts suggest slightly cooler conditions with a high near 94 degrees and a heat index also upward of 102. The heavy rainfall accompanying possible thunderstorms later today could lead to flood conditions, particularly given the susceptibility of urban landscapes to rapid water accumulation.
In addition to heat and possible flooding, there is a high rip current risk this evening for Kings (Brooklyn) and Southeast Suffolk, posing a danger to swimmers and beachgoers. Residents are advised to check NOAA Weather Radio or weather.gov for updates on the rip current risk, heat advisory, and flood watch. There is also a chance of severe thunderstorms with strong wind gusts.
No hazardous weather is expected over the following days from Wednesday through Monday that would meet National Weather Service warning criteria. However, forecasters note that spotter activation may be needed, signaling the importance of community contribution to weather observations and reporting during such severe conditions.
