New Yorkers are bracing for a surge in temperatures as forecasts predict sweltering heat across the boroughs. The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook, warning of hot and humid conditions through the end of the week and into the weekend. The heat index could reach up to 105 degrees on Friday, potentially meeting criteria for an excessive heat warning. Advisory-level heat index values between 95 and 100 degrees may also be reached on Thursday and Saturday.
The NWS forecasts mostly sunny skies for Manhattan and Brooklyn, with high temperatures expected to reach 97 degrees and 96 degrees respectively on Friday. Staten Island is also expected to experience similar conditions, with a high of 96 degrees.
The Bronx and Queens will also experience the heat wave, with forecasted highs of 97 and 95 degrees respectively on Friday, as reported by the NWS. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is expected Friday afternoon in both boroughs.
Although dangerous heat levels are forecasted, no hazardous weather conditions are expected today or tonight. As the city prepares for elevated temperatures, local authorities are expected to issue further guidance on safety measures and the availability of cooling centers.
