North Carolina residents are about to see a major boost in broadband infrastructure as the N.C. Department of Information Technology sets the wheels in motion for an extensive high-speed internet expansion project across North Carolina. According to a recent briefing, the Division of Broadband and Digital Opportunity has released guidelines and application materials for internet service providers as part of the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) initiative. With a solid $1.5 billion in federal funding on the table, the program's goal is to significantly widen the reach of high-speed internet connectivity.
Prequalified providers who have managed to send in their materials ahead of the July 7 deadline can now proceed to quickly submit full applications by the end of July. "We appreciate broadband providers for quickly complying with the BEAD program's new federal requirements and deadlines," Annette Taylor, NCDIT's Deputy Secretary for Broadband and Digital Opportunity, explained in a statement captured by N.C. Department of Information Technology Division of Broadband and Digital Opportunity. Her comments reflect the department's recognition of the critical role service providers play in this expansive effort to bring internet access to more citizens.
Extensive resources have been made available to aid applicants through this process, including the BEAD subgrantee selection guidance and application details located on the NCDIT's website. Moreover, updates to the BEAD-eligible locations have also been incorporated into the BEAD Planning Map under the NC OneMap's broadband mapping tools. These resources aim to streamline the application process and allow for necessary modifications to the eligible locations to be made before submitting to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for the final proposal.
Looking to further support applicants, the Division of Broadband has scheduled a series of informational webinars. A session specifically designed to clarify the subgrantee selection process has been fixed for July 22, exclusively for broadband providers that are already prequalified or are currently working to meet prequalification conditions. In addition, a follow-up webinar will be held for stakeholders, including local leaders, set for July 23, providing an opportunity to gain insight into the BEAD program among other broadband initiatives. As per the Federal notice, a tentative deadline of September 4 is now set for states to have their BEAD award proposals ready for NTIA's perusal, pushing NCDIT to expedite the application process before kicking off other infrastructure programs.
In the context of current digital infrastructure developments, the significance of this initiative can't be understated. Prior to this rollout, NCDIT has been instrumental in allocating nearly $675 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds. These investments have already connected over a quarter of a million homes and businesses to high-speed internet, underscoring North Carolina's commitment to reducing the digital divide. Details on the BEAD program can be accessed at the Division of Broadband and Digital Opportunity's official site, giving interested parties and the public alike a clear view into the broader strategy for digital equity in North Carolina.
