The crime occurred on the morning of March 20, 2025, under the guise of a friendly gesture turned sinister. After hitching a ride, Guzman and Mendez instructed the driver to stop on a street in Oxnard, where their facade crumbled. Guzman executed a forceful removal of the car keys, and Mendez, brandishing what seemed to be a firearm, directed the driver to surrender all possessions and vacate the vehicle, threatening to shoot if the demands were not met. The victim, coerced by fear for his life, complied but was mocked as the pair drove away with his vehicle and his phone, leaving behind a trail of GPS breadcrumbs, courtesy of Mendez's ankle monitor, that would later become their downfall, per Deputy District Attorney Brandon Yeaton.
