
Commuters in Philadelphia, brace yourselves for a weekend of detours and delays as the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) undertakes bridge deck repairs on the I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway), starting Friday night, July 25. According to PennDOT, the westbound segment of the highway from the 34th Street off-ramp to the University Avenue on-ramp will be entirely closed from 9:00 PM Friday until 5:00 AM Monday, affecting the Grays Ferry neighborhood.
The closure is set to facilitate crucial repairs on bridge decks over Grays Ferry Avenue, along with Wharton Street, Reed Street, the Schuylkill River, and CSX rail tracks detours will be in place for local traffic directing them to exit at 34th Street, head right on Grays Ferry Avenue, right on Washington Avenue, left on 22nd Street, left on Walnut Street, and finally right on Schuylkill Avenue to rejoin the expressway this has been coordinated with the City of Philadelphia and regional transportation agencies to minimize disruption.
During the construction weekend, the University Avenue ramp and the South Street ramp to the westbound Schuylkill Expressway shall remain open, despite the 34th Street ramp closure, offering some solace to local motorists. The prescribed regional detour will redirect drivers to use I-95 North and I-676 West (Vine Street Expressway) as alternative routes, aiming to mitigate traffic snarls.
Milling operations, sounding procedures for detecting deteriorated concrete and subsequent patching with rapid set epoxy, along with final paving designed to extend longevity of the roadway surface and reduce future wear are among the tasks to be carried out, the construction work will bolster the infrastructure, employing a dense graded bituminous material that will serve as a sealant against water and road salts according to PennDOT.
Motorists are warned to expect significant backups in and around the closure zone and are advised to plan accordingly for any transit through the area; electronic message boards will be deployed to inform drivers of closures and alternative paths, and real-time traffic conditions can be accessed through the 511PA website or its associated smartphone application for updated information throughout the duration of the work.
