Last weekend, the Law Department hosted its 31st Annual Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Conference, echoing the legal community's ongoing commitment to professional development. Approximately 350 attorneys and legal professionals converged over two days, aiming to fulfill their CLE requirements through a series of courses designed by the Law Department's attorneys. The conference was a nexus for legal minds from different city agencies and elected officials to maintain a unified understanding of the current legal landscape.
The gathering saw contributions from multiple city departments, including the Police Department, the Managing Director’s Office, and the Departments of Labor and Revenue. Also, officials from the City Council and the Board of Ethics were among those who ensured a well-rounded educational experience, according to the City of Philadelphia. The topics spanned from the implications of AI in legal practice to the nuances of Philadelphia's Home Rule Charter, signaling the vast swath of knowledge modern legal professionals must navigate.
An unexpected highlight of the conference was an appearance by Mayor Cherelle Parker, who lauded the efforts of City attorneys. Her acknowledgment of their contributions to major projects such as the Riverview Wellness Village and the Northeast Philadelphia plane crash's emergency response showcased the real-world impacts of their work. The Mayor also reflected on their role during the 2024 election and in recent labor contract negotiations.
