Tragedy and crime marked a bustling weekend in Pierce County, with a series of incidents that included a fatal residential fire, a vehicular assault involving a DUI suspect, and a repeat offense of arson and vandalism linked to fireworks misuse. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department reported intense activity as responders worked to manage these events.
Last Friday, a fire engulfed a residence on the 7500 block of 144th St. SW in Gig Harbor. While most of the family managed to escape unharmed, an 80-year-old man tragically lost his life as the flames took their toll on the home. The fire's cause remains under investigation. As the search for answers continues, deputies initially scoured the home, looking for the elderly man, determining later with a heavy heart that he could not escape the blaze.
The weekend's turmoil extended to the roads as well, with a serious collision caused by alleged reckless driving unfolding at approximately 8:00pm on Monday. A black Mustang, according to deputies, barreled into the 21500 block of 22nd Ave. E in Spanaway, entering the opposing lane and striking two other vehicles. The Mustang's 49-year-old driver, suspected to be under the influence, was hospitalized and faces vehicular assault and DUI charges pending the outcome of a blood warrant. Fire responders treated the other involved victims at the scene, as detailed by the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.
Vandalism turned to arson on Sunday, where authorities encountered a brush fire on the 26800 block of Sumner Buckley Hwy E. The fire, sparked by a firework maliciously placed in a mailbox belonging to a homeowner who had recently replaced it due to a similar prior incident, has led deputies to suspect the actions of a repeat offender. This destructive act is now under the careful scrutiny of investigators.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department has invited anyone with information about these events to come forward.
