In an emotional display of community and tradition, the City of Pittsburgh has dedicated a street in the Northside to the memory of Gus and Yiayia’s Cart. This local food stand has been a fixture in Allegheny Commons Park for generations. According to WPXI, officials unveiled the Gus and Yiayia Way street sign today, commemorating the beloved spot known for its ice balls and popcorn.
Making the day poignant, the honor comes almost a year after the passing of Gus Kalaris, who died at the ripe age of 92. Kalaris, who had been at the helm since he was eight, took up the mantle from his parents, who had started the cart in 1934. Regaled not only for its refreshments, the stand symbolized something more: a locus of heartfelt connections in the community. "His ministry was the people," Mayor Ed Gainey said, as per a WPXI report, underscoring Kalaris' impact on those around him.
During the ceremony, Kalaris' legacy, which spans over nine decades, was remembered fondly. His daughter, Christina Avlon, reiterated her commitment to continue the family legacy, ensuring that Gus and Yiayia’s Cart will continue to serve the community. Reflecting on the significance of the ceremony, Avlon stated, as detailed by CBS News Pittsburgh, "It's very emotional for me today because it's been so many years. My family has been here in the park serving ice balls to hundreds and hundreds of loyal customers."
Gus and Yiayia's Cart has transitioned from a simple family business to a cultural icon, the street renaming ensuring that its story, infused with the flavor of Pittsburgh, remains an enduring part of the city's narrative.
