Commuters in New York City faced significant disruptions earlier today after a collision involving multiple buses prompted the closure of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. The New York Post reported that the incident occurred just after 6:15 a.m. at the bustling transit hub located in Midtown Manhattan, leading to at least a dozen people receiving treatment for minor injuries and one individual being transported to the hospital.
NJ Transit quickly took to managing the situation, rerouting buses to nearby stations such as Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, and Hoboken Terminal. "NJ TRANSIT bus service traveling to and from the New York Port Authority Bus Terminal is being diverted to Secaucus Junction, Newark Penn Station, and Hoboken Terminal. All trains will stop at Secaucus," NJ Transit detailed in a post, as reported by the New York Post.
Additionally, the organization announced that in the wake of the collision, bus tickets and passes would be cross-honored by various transportation services, including NJ Transit rail, New York Waterway at Port Imperial, and PATH service at Hoboken, Newark Penn Station, and 33rd Street New York. This information was further confirmed by Gothamist, which also noted that the New York City Fire Department was evaluating 14 individuals with non-life-threatening injuries on the scene.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, with authorities still investigating the circumstances. The lack of immediate clarity about the cause has only added to the disquiet of a morning already burdened by delays. Before the crash, NJ Transit had warned commuters of up to 20-minute delays due to an earlier disabled train at Penn Station, as well as significant congestion approaching the Lincoln Tunnel from New Jersey, according to Port Authority announcements.
The fallout from the collision was evident as the Lincoln Tunnel's approach was notably slow, with commuters finding themselves in a grip of transit paralysis. NJ Transit's early alert around 7:40 a.m. had yet to specify how long the terminal would remain shut, leaving many to unexpectedly adjust their morning routines.
