A Putnam County 911 dispatcher's career was abruptly cut short after she found herself on the other side of the law, facing charges of animal cruelty. Brianna Allender, 22, was dismissed from her duties following an arrest that has left the local sheriff deeply disheartened. In a statement acquired by First Coast News, Sheriff H.D. 'Gator' DeLoach expressed his dismay, saying, "This situation deeply saddens me," underscoring his incomprehension at the notion of anyone abandoning their dogs, especially given the resources available through their partnership with Animal Control. Allender's arrest marks the culmination of an active investigation by the Palatka Police Department, with further details expected as the case advances.
The Palatka Police Department, which is spearheading the investigation due to the alleged incident falling within their jurisdiction, notified the sheriff's office while Allender was still on duty, which led to her suspension and subsequent termination in alignment with the sheriff's office policy, said the authorities Allender, who had only contributed to the agency for a year, was taken into custody and agreed to meet with detectives; she was later released from Putnam County jail on a $2,500 bond, as reported by Action News Jax.
Reflecting on the gravity of the situation, Sheriff DeLoach reiterated his own affection for canines in a social media post mentioned by Action News Jax, where he stated, "As an avid dog lover I cannot fathom the idea of someone abandoning their dogs ... we have a working relationship with Animal Control and there are resources we could have provided if help had been requested. These animals should not have had to suffer," highlighting an opportunity missed for Allender to seek aid before the situation escalated to the point of legal involvement and her eventual loss of position.
Indeed, the swift actions taken by law enforcement reflect the seriousness with which such allegations are treated, and the Putnam County Sheriff's Office has voiced their full support for the ongoing investigation. The dispatcher was fired after police arrested her yesterday afternoon confirmed by WCJB, who also noted that Allender was released on bond yesterday evening.
