The Racine community is in mourning after a senseless tragedy struck early yesterday morning, claiming the life of an innocent woman. Chala Davis-Bell, a 37-year-old mother, was fatally shot around 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of 11th Street and Washington Avenue in Racine. According to police, Davis-Bell was inadvertently caught in the crossfire between at least two suspects engaging in a gunfight.
A vigil was held for Davis-Bell, where friends and family gathered to honor her memory. More than 50 people came together, with some pouring tequila over sand that was covering the dried blood still visible from the overnight shooting, as reported by CBS 58. The community lit candles and released balloons, echoing some of Davis-Bell's favorite sayings in remembrance.
Deputy Chief Jessie Metoyer described the scene of the incident to reporters, saying, "A young woman who was out with one girlfriend, and they were just having a nice time in the street just enjoying the summer," as recounted in a statement obtained by CBS 58. The event wasn't even at a crowded area; they were simply out there enjoying themselves and became entirely innocent victims.
In an emotional interview, Deja Franklin, who was with Davis-Bell at the time of her death, shared with CBS 58, "Her last words to me was, 'They shot me, friend.' That's gonna forever be marked in my head, in my mind." Franklin recounted their plans to go to a nearby bar after dancing outside their car, which was tragically interrupted by the gunfire.
Davis-Bell was known as a caring mother and a valued member of the community, driven for a Milwaukee school bus company. "Man, they took somebody that was great," Franklin told CBS 58, mourning the loss. "They took somebody that's great. Y'all took her from her daughter, man. Y'all took her from her daughter," she added, underscoring the heartbreaking impact of Davis-Bell's untimely death on her young daughter.
As the Racine Police Department continues their investigation, they are searching for suspects related to the shooting. The unfortunate event has highlighted a worrying trend of violence in the area, as mentioned in a report by TMJ4.
