A Mexican national has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for illegally reentering the United States. Santos Esparza-Torres, who has been deported five times before, will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Esparza-Torres was found by immigration officials after being previously deported in 2005, 2008, 2019, and twice in 2020. He had reentered the U.S. illegally and was taken into ICE custody in 2024 while serving a state sentence for conspiracy to violate a controlled substances law. He is eligible for parole in March 2026. After that, he will begin serving a 24-month federal sentence, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Esparza-Torres pleaded guilty to the charge of "Deported Alien Found in the United States," his second conviction for the same offense. His first conviction was in the Southern District of California in 2020. The case was investigated by ICE Salt Lake City, Las Vegas Sub-Office, and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Nevada. The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Sigal Chattah and Salt Lake City Field Office Director Jason Knight.
