Yesterday morning in Northwest Jacksonville, an exchange of gunfire between a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) officer and a robbery suspect ended with the suspect dead and the officer wounded, JSO Chief Alan Parker has confirmed. This officer-involved shooting is notably the 10th of its kind this year, a number which surpasses last year's total and also tops the counts for two out of the last five years. News4JAX reported that the 2024 figure stood at eight while nine such incidents occurred in 2021, as per the JSO's transparency portal.

The situation began when a man, described as wearing a mask, allegedly entered a Family Dollar store and demanded money while threatening an employee with a gun. The suspect, believed to be 20 years old, then fled with around $100 in cash. This action prompted a witness to call the police, providing them with a description of the individual. An officer responding to the robbery spotted someone matching the suspect’s description and pursued the individual on foot near Soutel Drive and Norfolk Boulevard, according to a First Coast News article.

The chase culminated in an altercation; as News4JAX reports, the officer was attempting to take the suspect to the ground when the suspect fired two shots, hitting the officer once in the leg. The officer managed to return fire, fatally wounding the suspect. Despite being injured, the officer applied a tourniquet to his leg before Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) arrived at the scene. Both the officer and suspect were taken to a local hospital where the suspect was pronounced dead.
