The Rocket Classic, a mainstay on the PGA Tour calendar, is set to tee off at a later date in the summer of 2026, from July 30 to August 2, shifting away from its traditional June window. The Detroit Golf Club, host of the event, and the PGA Tour appear to have agreed upon these dates, which follow the British Open slated for July 16-19 at Royal Birkdale. This strategic move is seen as an effort to improve the strength of the field by attracting players vying for FedEx Cup playoff positions, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
Traditionally, the Rocket Classic struggled with luring top-ranked players, finding its schedule sandwiched between higher purse, major events such as the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship, and succeeded by the Scottish Open. The late July to early August timeframe might entice players on the verge of FedEx Cup playoff qualification to tee up in Detroit. The aim is to bolster the competitive feel of the tournament, which has, in the past, taken a hit due to the absence of marquee names.
On the logistical side, the Detroit Free Press explains that a $16.1 million renovation at the Detroit Golf Club is underway. The revamp will include a redesign of the greens, bunkers, and the removal of the pond on the 14th hole. Furthermore, the course will stretch an additional 300 yards, setting it to measure nearly 7,700 yards. The extra weeks provided by the schedule change will allow the course to mature and achieve the desired fast-playing conditions.
While the PGA Tour's complete schedule for 2026 has yet to be unveiled, the shift in the Rocket Classic's dates seems to inject new life into the Detroit event's future. The tournament is under contract through 2026, with an option for a one-year extension held by the Rocket Companies. As per The Detroit News, incoming PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp and commissioner Jay Monahan's recent visit to Detroit alongside the tournament’s calendar change signal a promising horizon for the tournament’s stay in Motor City beyond its current contract.
