A San Antonio man has been handed a sentence of over 10 years in federal prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, declared on Wednesday, came after a federal jury's conviction back in February, according to a U.S. Department of Justice release.
33-year-old Dante Delray Vecera, the man in question, was discovered unresponsive in his vehicle that was obstructing traffic. As per the court documents and evidence presented during the trial, his car was on the 410 frontage road, loaded with a bag of white powder, a joint, and another bag containing what seemed like black tar heroin. On administering Narcan to counteract a potential overdose, the police found an unholstered, loaded pistol in Vecera's pants while searching for identification. Vecera, who regained consciousness as the officers acted, later refused sobriety tests and was arrested after his medical clearance, the evidence presented at trial said.
The prior record of Vecera includes a series of violent offenses: he had been convicted of burglary and sexually motivated coercion in Nevada, along with an assault and breach of protective order in Texas. U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas stated that Vecera's history contributed to the length of his current sentence. The case saw the collaboration of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, alongside the San Antonio and Castle Hills Police Departments in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Karina O’Daniel and Amy Hail led the prosecution.
Vecera was sentenced to 125 months in federal prison for unlawful possession of a firearm, a penalty influenced by his prior felony convictions. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, the sentence reflects federal efforts to enforce gun laws and address firearm offenses involving individuals with criminal histories. Authorities stated that the prosecution aligns with ongoing initiatives to enhance public safety through stricter enforcement of existing firearm regulations.
