A San Antonio man has been handed a 10-year federal prison sentence after being convicted of conspiring to transport 25 undocumented immigrants inside a tanker trailer, officials said Thursday. The case, tied to a crackdown on illegal immigration and smuggling operations, was part of the Operation Take Back America initiative, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Richard Rindeikis, 44, was stopped for inspection at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Carrizo Springs on November 18, 2024, where he initially claimed the tanker was empty. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office, agents discovered the human cargo after referring Rindeikis to a secondary inspection due to his inability to produce a driver's license.
The individuals found in the tanker hailed from various Latin American countries, including Ecuador, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico. Following the discovery, Rindeikis was charged with two counts, but he subsequently pleaded guilty to one count on February 5. "This district has seen far too many instances of human smuggling like this one end in tragedy. If not for the excellent work by the U.S. Border Patrol in this case, we may have seen another," U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons for the Western District of Texas was quoted in the U.S. Attorney's Office release.
Craig Larrabee, ICE Homeland Security Investigations San Antonio Special Agent in Charge, described the smuggling attempt as both illegal and inhumane, "This sentencing is a grim reminder of the extreme measures smugglers will take for profit, endangering the lives of vulnerable individuals in the process," he said, as stated by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The quick response of law enforcement arguably prevented what could have been a fatal outcome for those trapped inside the tanker. The case was investigated by HSI and USBP, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Duarte leading the prosecution.
Operation Take Back America underscores a broader federal effort to stem illegal immigration and dismantle criminal organizations. Leveraging resources from the Department of Justice's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods, the operation focuses on intensifying the fight against cartels and violent offenders, as per the U.S. Attorney's Office.
