A San Antonio man has received a severe sentence for the heinous crimes he committed against children, as reported by the U.S. Department of Justice. Charles Alexander Lopez, aged 30, was condemned to 65 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to sexually exploiting three children. Court documents revealed that Lopez obnoxiously referred to his abuse as "My conquest for the day" in a group chat on the Wickr app, where he also shared images and a video of his violent acts, including the assault of a male toddler and a non-verbal autistic child.
The extensive investigation by the FBI San Antonio, following a tip from FBI Albany, uncovered Lopez’s long history of predatory behavior; he freely admitted to sexually assaulting and exploiting at least 15 minors over two decades who has used his smartphone to produce and distribute child sexual abuse material (CSAM) having shared specifics of the atrocities during private chats with an FBI Online Covert Employee (OCE). The execution of a federal search warrant on October 26, 2023, led to the seizure of devices used to perpetrate these crimes, and Lopez's arrest followed swiftly on October 27 by the task force dedicated to combating child exploitation and human trafficking.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Senior U.S. District Judge David Ezra issued the sentence on July 14 along with a restitution order of $150,000 for the victims, ensuring a small measure of justice for the irreparable harm inflicted. Underscoring the severity of the crimes, U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons expressed that "Individuals like this, who take every opportunity to prey on helpless children simply cannot remain free in our society" and acknowledged the lifelong impacts of Lopez's "selfish and vile choices" on innocent lives.
Aaron Tapp, the FBI's Special Agent in Charge in San Antonio, reinforced this sentiment by stating, "There is no place in our society for those who prey on the most vulnerable among us," a grim reminder of the crucial ongoing work needed to protect children from such egregious acts, the task force he leads along with the U.S. Attorney's Office won’t relent in their effort to prosecute those who commit violent acts against children. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracy Thompson, further details about the investigation and sentencing were outlined in a statement released by the U.S. Department of Justice.
