
In a significant crackdown on retail crime, Santa Monica police conducted an operation resulting in 10 individuals being detained in the shopping district known for its bustling energy, the 3rd Street Promenade. According to a report by KTLA, the bust included the arrest of suspects caught stealing from various stores, including Target, Lululemon, TJ Maxx, Nike, and Rite Aid.
Officers dressed in both plain clothes and uniforms apprehended the suspects, one of who were captured on body cam footage released by police. Using a combination of ground tactics and technological tools such as a drone and an automatic license plate reader, two suspects were additionally caught in a stolen vehicle that contained burglary tools and meth paraphernalia, reported by the Santa Monica Police Department's Instagram post.
The suspects' identities have not been made public, with authorities stressing the commitment to Santa Monica's safety. "Thank you to our officers and community partners for their hard work and dedication," said Santa Monica officials, as stated by KTLA. The operation rounded up 10 suspects who faced charges varying from felonies to misdemeanors.
Moreover, among the incidents during last week's mission, a vendor dispute near the beach led to the arrest of two chronic vendors detained for assault. According to the Santa Monica Police Department's Instagram post, having prior convictions for vehicle theft, one of the suspects arrested during the felony stop was found. These efforts all fall under the police department's umbrella initiative to prioritize the safety and security of local merchants and patrons.
