A man from Spring, Texas, has found himself on the wrong side of the law for allegedly making a death threat against U.S. Senator John Cornyn. As reported by CW39, earlier this month, Andrew Sikes left a profanity-laced voicemail at the senator's office, threatening Senator Cornyn's life. The voicemail reportedly contained the phrase, "You’re not going to get past this next election."
Upon further investigation, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local authorities arrested 71-year-old Andrew David Sikes. During questioning, CW39 reports, Sikes admitted to making the call. When taken into custody by FBI Houston and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Sikes expressed his aggravation towards not only Cornyn but other lawmakers as well.
The specifics of the voicemail were grimmer still, as noted by FOX 26 Houston, quoting the message, "Hey, its Andy Sikes, Spring Texas [zip code redacted], f*** you running, you f***ing are killing Texans you’re killing people I’m gonna kill you, bye mother f***er, you’re not going to get past this next election d***."
However, Sikes contended his violent words did not translate to violent intentions. While discussing his shoot-from-the-hip phone manner with agents, he mentioned owning a 9mm gun but insisted that he had no plan to enact any violence, according to the charging documents obtained by FOX 26 Houston. "I don't think [I threatened them] with death or anything," Sikes reportedly stated, referencing the flooding tragedy in Kerrville, Texas, that had sparked his anger toward the senator.
The case against Andrew Sikes is currently ongoing, marking another instance of fraught civic engagement evolving into potential criminal behavior. His actions bring forward the very palpable tensions simmering just beneath the surface of our political landscape, tensions that now have led to Sikes facing serious allegations by the authorities. The full repercussions for his voicemail diatribe remain to be understood as the investigation proceeds.
